How about a preference for both?  I generally find the color annoying in 
workspaces, and _greatly_ appreciate shout in browsers and the debugger.

There is a preference to disable automatic definition of workspace variables??? 
 Great idea!!!  I'm not a fan of them.

I would go for the workspace with color.
and we should set the pref to have to type | | to declare varaibles.
