I fully agree with Stéphane that it is time to re-invent Smalltalk!

Smalltalk could once again allow someone to invent the future. Pharo could
become some sort of "Smalltalk in the cloud", which in the true spirit of
Smalltalk would include:

- a common language;

- an integrated development environment and;

- shared open source packages/classes.

The main challenges for Pharo are probably:

Step 1. to make the development environment more intuitive (remove all
non-core packages);

Step 2. to simplify collaborating on a project online and;

Step 3. to make sharing and distributing non-core packages transparent.

Pharo currently seems to be focussing mainly on Step 1. I believe Pharo is
on the right track because a bigger active community will maximise
innovation, and to get more people involved, the environment will need to be
more intuitive. For Step 2 and 3 Pharo may need to have a look at some sort
of integrated Monticello, SqueakMap, Package Universe mix in the form of a
Pharo GitHub?

Anyway, as it is now Pharo is still a bit too complex for me, but I will
keep a close eye on Pharo!

On a side note: Electronic mailing lists have been around - and have been
very effective - long before there were any online discussion forums. As a
project promoting innovation, I believe that project members should be able
to read, post and subscribe to project related discussions on the project
website without having to subscribe to a mailing list (and sorry but gmane
sucks).

Cheers, Geert
