I'd just unzip or untar the contents of the archives somewhere convenient. On Linux all the plug-ins are external so you need to move the entire directory tree. On Windows it's a single file as all plugins are built internally. I've followed the lead of the main VM maintainers for each platform for this. I can modify how these VMs are packaged if something else is more convenient.
