My office desktop is ubuntu and I've just unzipped the linux download from the 
Pharo downloads page. I just run the squeak executable directly.

The one thing I've had to do though is to set NetNameResolver 
class>>useOldNetwork to undonditionally return true.

I think I am running an 8.0 Ubuntu version (it's hard to tell from home:).
