IMHO we should use 4.0.3.2202 Unix VM from http://squeakvm.org/unix/. This
one is packaged in Debian. It has gnuification, Freetype, all tests green, I
use it every day :)

If you want a VM from scratch, the way to go is easy_squeakvm, works well
too (for me). It would be sexy to put this on the Hudson server and to
measure time to run all Pharo tests with different gcc versions (it seems
the version of gcc can have a lot of influence on the VM speed).
