If you really want MS Excel, then you can easily reverse-engineer the XML format that MS Excel (optionally) uses. Not so long ago, on a paid job, I wrote code to emit report data in an XML format of my choosing. Then an xslt transformation was used to turn it into the XML format that MS Excel could use.
