I had the same error on Ubuntu 11.10 (32bit). This is the output from ldd:

$ ldd lib/squeak/4.0-2522/squeak
        linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0x00f42000)
        libutil.so.1 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libutil.so.1 (0x0066e000)
        libdl.so.2 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libdl.so.2 (0x00cfc000)
        libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpthread.so.0 (0x004af000)
        libm.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libm.so.6 (0x005b6000)
        libnsl.so.1 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libnsl.so.1 (0x00b03000)
        libc.so.6 => /lib/i386-linux-gnu/libc.so.6 (0x00110000)
        /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00bf3000)

So I had to modify the squeak launcher in order to get it working:
