I got the VM running fine on Debian 6 amd64 version and posted the steps.

Mostly symlinking issues.

I guess you can the VM to work on Ubuntu 10 without hassles doing more
or less the same thing. Is your Ubuntu a 32-bit install or a 64-bit
one?
