If you want to try a one-click image for linux, I made this a couple of weeks ago: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/43706148/arduino.tar.gz. It's just for testing and it's based on the Etoys image, but it should be enough to get you started. If you try it, please tell me how does that work for you.
