Will preferences work if the application is distributed to other machines.  I guess it might work if the preferences file sits next to the image file, but not automatically if it was installed on another machine via a ConfigurationOfXXX. The other alternative may be to plug into the #startup mechanism.  Take a look at the class PhLDeploymentScript in PharoLauncher [1]. Also you might find some interesting tips to carry over from [2] - but be aware that is written for old version Squeak 3.9.
