Dear all, Next week, Serious Metaphysics will feature our own Kyle Mitchell speaking on "Pragmatism, Realism and Modality" (abstract below).
As usual, the session will take place at 4:30pm on Wednesday, in the Philosophy Faculty Board Room. Unfortunately I'll be away at a conference, but Lukas Skiba has kindly agreed to chair in my stead. Best, Emily _____________________________________ Abstract: In a recent paper, Robert Brandom claims that his modal expressivism is compatible with and complementary to a `robust modal realism', where `robust' indicates a metaphysical position. I argue that Brandom should reject robust modal realism and instead endorse metaphysical quietism. My strategy will be do describe Brandom's argument and then consider whether Brandom's expressivist project can complement two different programs in modal metaphysics: contemporary modal realism and Kantian transcendental metaphysics. I argue that the former is in tension with Brandom's understanding of representation while the latter is in tension with Brandom's perceived naturalism. Along the way, I will introduce the metaphysical quietism of another neo-pragmatist, Huw price, and show that Brandom's program fits nicely within Pricean quietism. _____________________________________________________ Sent by the CamPhilEvents mailing list.
