Dear All,

Next Tuesday (13th November) Owen Griffiths, from the University of
Cambridge, will give a talk entitled 'Introducing identity'.

The meeting will start at 5.15pm and will be held in the Fisher Building of
St. John's College in either the Boys Smith Room, the Dirac Room, or the
Castlereagh Room.

As usual, the speaker will present for no longer than 45 minutes, followed
by a discussion until 7.00pm.

If you would like to join Owen for dinner after the talk, then please let
me know by noon on Tuesday.

The abstract is as follows:

Inferentialists attempt to give the meanings of expressions in terms of
their introduction and elimination rules, and a usual starting point is the
logical constants. I present a problem for inferentialism, namely that it
cannot account for our talk of identity. I will also discuss the identity
of indiscernibles, the criteria for logical constanthood, and ways in which
we can account for identity if we reject inferentialism.
