Dear all,
The first HPS Philosophy Workshop of the new year is tomorrow, 16/10/13, at 5pm.
For this first session, I (Toby Bryant, HPS PhD student) will be presenting
work that constituted a section of my first year report, abstract below. In
characteristic HPS Philosophy Workshop fashion, my thoughts on the topic are
still extremely rough. All feedback appreciated!
Please email me if you would like the reading. It's very short!
ABSTRACT:
It has been agreed by a number of philosophers that the goal of explanation is
to confer understanding, but for a number of reasons understanding has been
sidelined in the philosophical agenda. A recent revival of interest has put
understanding back under the spotlight, but chiefly in terms of understanding
phenomena using theories. I argue that another significant type of
understanding is understanding theories themselves, and give a very brief
sketch of what an account of understanding theories might look like, based on
an account of understanding formulated by Newman (2012) according to which
understanding is related to making appropriate inferences about mental
representations.
The HPS Philosophy workshop takes place in Seminar Room 1 in the HPS Department
on Free School lane, on Wednesdays at 5pm, and is open to all, although
students are particularly encouraged to attend and contribute. There is also
tea, coffee and biscuits incase you needed more encouragement. I hope to see as
many of you tomorrow as possible given the relatively short notice!
Best,
Toby
