Simpson" <[email protected]> To: [email protected], [email protected] Dear all, The next session of the Serious Metaphysics Group will be on Wednesday 30th October, as usual in the Philosophy Faculty board room between 5.30 - 7.00pm. This week we have Tim Button giving a talk entitled "Demotivating deflationism" (abstract below). I hope to see many of you there. Best wishes, Matthew Simpson Tim Button - Demotivating Deflationism: Deflationists typically tell us that it's very easy to know everything there is to know about truth. In particular, they claim that we can exhaust that knowledge by the scheme: ------the proposition that p is true iff p or, alternatively, by the scheme: ------the sentence 'p' is true iff p I will argue that their main reasons for thinking this are both technically and philosophically sloppy. With deflationism demotivated, we have space for a correspondence theory of truth. -- Matthew Simpson PhD Student in Philosophy University of Cambridge Mail: Robinson College, Cambridge, CB3 9AN _____________________________________________________ Sent by the CamPhilEvents mailing list.
