Dear all,

The second meeting of the Graduate seminar this term will take place
next Monday. Mat Simpson will be giving a paper entitled 'Localist
Quasi-realism and Semantic Minimalism'. An abstract is attached below.

We will be starting at 4.30pm and finishing at about 6.00pm in the
Graduate common room. Afterwards we'll head to a pub.

Hope to see you all there,
Carlo

Abstract:

Simon Blackburn's meta-ethical quasi-realism stands against the idea
that ethical statements represent the world, in any substantial sense.
However, Blackburn is a localist quasi-realist in the sense that he
thinks that some language does represent the world in this sense, so
quasi-realism is not appropriate in all cases. Huw Price has argued that
Blackburn's acceptance of minimalist or deflationist views about truth
and related notions makes his localism impossible; instead he must
embrace global quasi-realism. I argue that Price's argument (as offered
in Macarthur and Price 2007) fails due to false claims about the impact
of minimalism. I hope to show that closer examination of the argument
gives us a better perspective on quasi-realism and its relationship with
minimalism. However, this ultimately shows us that Price's conclusion is
correct, just for different reasons than the ones he offers.
I also think, for what it's worth, that the grad seminar may not be the
best venue for a respondent type system - one of the best things about
it is that it is so friendly and open, and I think having a respondent
would make that a bit less so.
