Dear all,
This week's meeting of the Serious Metaphysics Group will take place on
Wednesday December 4th, between 5.30-7.00pm. This week our speaker is
Carlo Rossi who will be giving a talk entitled _Intensionalism, States
of Affairs, and Intrinsic Relativistic Predication _(abstract below). I
hope to see you there - this will be the last meeting of the SMG this
term.
IMPORTANT - SMG LENT TERM TIME CHANGE: There is still the issue of a
timetable change for the SMG next term. Earlier this term I emailed
about a possible time change, and currently the best slot appears to be
between 11.00am-12.30pm, still on Wednesdays. This will hopefully allow
as many people as possible to come, including for once those who can't
come at the moment due to childcare and other commitments, and it also
doesn't interfere too much with lunch or with CamPoS. Though I know that
no one time is going to be ok for everyone, unless I get a big deluge of
objections I will ask the Faculty office to rearrange the group time for
next term at least. If this time works, in Easter we can continue with
it or a suitable alternative, and then next year hopefully an even
better time can be sorted for the SMG.

Carlo Rossi - _Intensionalism, States of Affairs, and Intrinsic
Relativistic Predication_
"A substantial part of the contemporary debate on the metaphysics of
change and persistence has dealt on the impact that the Special Theory
of Relativity has in the way we explain the conditions of persistence of
material objects, by translating our most plausible accounts of
endurance and perdurance from a non-relativistic to a relativistic
framework. However, little attention has been paid to a similar task
that should be pursued in the domain of temporary intrinsic properties.
Such neglect is a considerably serious one, especially in light of the
criticism raised by Sattig (2006) to the standard accounts of temporary
intrinsics available to endurance theorists. In particular, Sattig
charges these accounts of not being able to meet the Temporal
Supervenience task, which consists in (i) specifying the spacetime facts
on which certain types of ordinary temporal facts supervene and (ii)
explaining how these ordinary temporal facts supervene. In particular,
facts about persistence and facts about temporal instantiation. This
paper aims to defend an account of temporary intrinsics available to
endurantists that combines elements of an intensional semantics with an
ontology of state of affairs for solving the Problem of Change (Forbes
1988, Mellor 1998, Koons 2000, Haslanger 2003), thus showing it
represents a viable alternative for the endurantist in order to deal
with the challenge posed by Sattig."
