A banquet, moreover, where there is no risk of putting on weight, and no
cost except perhaps many of your preconceptions about the history of
philosophy.

This year a new paper has been introduced into the Philosophy Tripos,
'Philosophy in the Long Middle Ages'. A wonderful group of texts has been
set, on two themes, and I shall run a seminar on each of them every week
(Tuesdays, 2.00 - 3.30: Universals; Thursdays, 2.00 - 3.30 Mind and Body),
starting this Thursday, 16 January. But, though the tables are laid, and the
waiter (myself) is at the ready, no one has turned up, and there is every
danger that the delicacies will be left to rot: that is to say, no
undergraduates, at least so far, have signed up to do the exam this year.
That is why I am sending out this Invitation, to a broader range of
graduates and more senior scholars, in and out of the faculty. I would
hesitate to advertise my own teaching, but these are seminars, based around
texts, and the value of the occasions depends, not on me, but on the texts
themselves and those who come. So please consider doing so. Each series of
seminars is independent of the other, and although there will be a
continuity between seminars in each series, I shall try and arrange them so
that someone who can only attend some will still be able to understand them
and profit from coming. The absence of students taking an examination means
that the seminars can be more flexible than otherwise in taking account of
the particular interests of those who come along.

You can see the details of the set texts, around which, in principle, the
course will be structured at
http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/curr-students/II/II-outlines-reading-lists/paper5-
longmiddleages/view (download PDF). But please remember that (a) you will
not be expected to have read anything at the first seminar in each series;
(b) we have some room for variation in the course; (c) some of the set texts
are too long for us to study in detail, and I shall be proposing shorter
sections of them on which to concentrate.
