2014 Joint Session of the Aristotelian Society & the Mind Association

About
The Joint Session is a three-day conference in philosophy that is co-organised 
every year by the Aristotelian Society and the Mind Association. Since 1910, 
the Joint Session has grown to become the largest gathering of philosophers in 
the United Kingdom, attracting prestigious UK and international speakers 
working in a broad range of philosophical areas. Inaugurated by the incoming 
President of the Mind Association, the Joint Session includes symposia, open 
and postgraduate sessions, and a range of satellite conferences.
The 88th Joint Session will be held at the University of Cambridge on the 
weekend of 11 - 13 July 2014. The local organiser is Dr. Tim Button.  The 
Session will be held at Fitzwilliam College.

Call for papers - The Open Sessions

The Open Sessions take place during the Saturday and Sunday afternoons of the 
conference. There are a large number of places available, allowing room for an 
extensive and diverse programme of talks. There are no restrictions on the 
areas of philosophy which papers may address. The intention is to accommodate 
all philosophical material (so far as time and space in the programme allow) 
that is suitable for presentation. Each Open Session talk lasts up to 20 
minutes and is followed by an additional 10 minutes for discussion.

Guidelines
• Submissions should be no more than 2000 words, including footnotes and 
bibliography, and should begin with a 100 word abstract.
• Submissions should be prepared for blind review.

• Submissions should be typewritten in a standard 12 pt font and single-spaced 
throughout (including references and quotations). All pages should be numbered 
and have margins of one inch or more.
• Submissions should be submitted in PDF.

Papers for the Open Session should be submitted online at the Official 2014 
Joint Session Website by 1 February 2014.*

Official 2014 Joint Session Website. The Aristotelian Society does not process 
Open Session submissions. For information regarding the Postraduate Session, 
please see below.

Additional Information
Authors whose papers have been accepted for the Open Session will be informed 
by the end of March 2012.
Papers accepted for the Open Sessions will not be considered for publication in 
the Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society and expenses will not be paid.
Only one paper per individual may be submitted. Submissions must be for either 
the Open or the Postgraduate Sessions - not both. Rejected submissions for the 
Postgraduate Session could be recommended for the Open Session.
All conference delegates must be members of either the Aristotelian Society or 
the Mind Association.

Call for papers - The Graduate Sessions
The Postgraduate Session occurs on the Saturday afternoon of the conference. 
All submissions are blind reviewed and a maximum of eight are selected for 
presentation. Only current postgraduate students (including those who have 
obtained a postgraduate degree within the past year) may submit for the 
Postgraduate Session. Each talk for the Postgraduate Session lasts up to 20 
minutes and is followed by an additional 10 minutes for discussion.

Guidelines
• Submissions should be no more than 2500 words, including footnotes and 
bibliography, and should begin with a 100-250 word abstract.
• Submissions should be prepared for blind review. They should be accompanied 
by a separate document containing the name of the author, title of the paper, 
institution and status, and email and mailing addresses. Submissions should not 
include any self-identifying references in the body or footnotes of the text.
• Submissions should be typewritten in a standard 12 pt font and single-spaced 
throughout (including references and quotations). All pages should be numbered 
and have margins of one inch or more.
• Submissions should be formatted in Word, RTF, or PDF. Papers containing 
symbols liable to distortion should be submitted in PDF.

Postgraduate Session page of our websiteby 1 February 2014.*

*NOTE: Papers to be considered for the Postgraduate Session must be submitted 
online via the Postgraduate Session page of our website. The philosophy 
department at the University of Cambridge does not process Postgraduation 
Session submissions. For information regarding the Open Session, please scroll

Additional Information
Students whose papers have been selected for the Postgraduate Session will be 
informed by the end of March 2012.
The selected postgraduate students will have their conference fee and 
accommodation expenses covered by the Aristotelian Society and the Mind 
Association.
Exemplary papers delivered for the Postgraduate Session may be considered for 
publication in the Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society.
