Dear all,
The next SMG meeting will be on Wednesday 29th Jan, between 11am-12.30pm (once again, please note the new time) in the Philosophy Faculty board room. Our speaker is Kyle Mitchell on "Metaontological Pluralism" (abstract below). I hope to see you there! For more details about this term's programme, please see http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/seminars-phil/SMG Best wishes, Matthew Simpson Kyle Mitchell - _Metaontological Pluralism:_ "Carnap claimed that ontological claims always take place within, what he called, a "linguistic framework". I will discuss a metaontological stance which claims that (1) there are at least two linguistic frameworks which perform different practical jobs and (2) that neither of these linguistic frameworks should be privileged over the other. I will try to flesh out this view by dipping into the Quine-Carnap dispute, discussing some plausible views which fit into the general metaontological framework and by considering how we are to think about quantification on this view. Finally, I will offer some motivations for endorsing "metaontological pluralism" and attempt to fend of some objections inspired by the recent literature in metaontology." -- Matthew Simpson PhD Student in Philosophy University of Cambridge Mail: Robinson College, Cambridge, CB3 9AN
