Dear all,
This Friday 07/02/14, Matt Penfold (HPS) will be giving a presentation on an
early draft of his work, titled ‘What is Evidence?’
Abstract: The positions of the planets, ancient human writings, and bus queuing
behaviour are all instances of evidence. (So are spotty tongues, hygrometer
readouts, and fresh dung.) What unites them? Is it the relations each have to
something else; to claims, perspectives, or theories? Is it how we use them?
Can they really all be the same thing? The focus of our discussion will be on
the enormous variety of things ordinarily classed as evidence, how to even
begin thinking about the question of what evidence is, and what a general
theory might hope to achieve.
Please email me if you would like a copy of any reading.
The HPS Philosophy Workshop is a laid back and friendly environment for
postgrads and postdocs to present works-in-progress. We meet alternating
Fridays in HPS Seminar Room 1. If you would like to present during the Easter
term, please let me know!
All the best,
Toby
