Dear all,
The next meeting of the Serious Metaphysics Group will be held on
Wednesday May 7th at 11am-12.30pm in the philosophy faculty board room.
Our speaker this week is Ali Boyle who will be giving a talk entitled
_Self-awareness and self-representation_ (abstract below).
Hope to see you all there!
Best wishes,
Matthew Simpson
Ali Boyle - _Self-awareness and self-representation_
"I consider whether all forms of self-awareness involve
self-representation, by examining Peacocke's (2014) distinction between
three degrees of self-representation. Peacocke suggests that there could
be a conscious creature whose mental states involved no
self-representation - a 'degree 0' creature. I question both the
plausibility of Peacocke's description of degree 0 creatures, and his
claim that such a creature would not be self-aware. I argue that a
degree 0 creature would still be self-aware in a very basic sense,
simply in virtue of being conscious. I attempt to characterise this
basic sense of self-awareness by claiming that the subject figures in
the experience not as part of the content, but as part of what I
(tentatively) call the 'form' of the experience."
