for anyone who is interested, we will start the following reading group:

History and Philosophy of Economics

The reading group discusses selected topics in the History and 
Philosophy of Economics. The first four weeks will be spent reading a 
number of classical texts from between 1871 and 1945, we then move to 
more recent philosophical debates on methodological individualism, 
explanation and inductive risk:

Week 1:

•       Schmoller, G (1874) Review of the Principles

Week 2:
•       Menger, C (1883) Investigations into the Method of the Social Sciences 
(selections)
•       Schmoller, G (1883) Review of Investigations

Week 3:
•       Wicksell, K. The influence of the interest rate on prices
•       Fisher, I. The Purchasing Power of Money and Its Determination and 
Relation to Credit, Interest and Crises (chapter II and VIII)

Week 4:
•       Keynes, J.M. The End of Laissez-Faire (1926)
•       Keynes, J.M. The General Theory of Employment (1937)
•       Keynes, J.M. The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money 
(selections)

Week 5:
•  List, C. & Spiekermann, K. (2013) Methodological Individualism and 
Holism in Political Science: A Reconciliation'
•  Kincaid, H. (2014) Dead Ends and Live Issues in the 
Individualism-Holism Debate'

Week 6:
•       Cartwright, N. (2003) 'From Causation to Explanation and Back’

Week 7:

•       Rudner, Richard. (1953) The scientist qua scientist makes value 
judgments.
•       Douglas, H. (2009). Science, policy, and the value-free ideal. 
Chapters 2 - 4

Week 8:

•       Douglas, H. (2009). Science, policy, and the value-free ideal. 
Chapters 5 & 6


We will meet every Wednesday at 10 am. The first week we will be in the 
Junior Parlour Room, Gonville and Caius. After this we alternate between 
seminar rooms 1 and 2 at King’s College.
