Dear all, The next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club will be held on Tuesday 24th February, in the Sidgwick Hall in Newnham College. Our speaker is Shyane Siriwardena (Cambridge) who will be giving a talk entitled "The Agency Theory of Causation: Unsound or Incomplete" (abstract below).
There is a small charge for attendance: either £2 (student) or £3 (other) for this meeting, or £7.50 (student) or £15 (other) for the remainder of the academic year. Everyone is very welcome to join us after the talk for tea and biscuits in the Faculty. Best wishes, Matthew Simpson and Ali Boyle Shyane Siriwardena - "The Agency Theory of Causation: Unsound or Incomplete" The agency theory of causation, as defended by Huw Price, bills itself as a theory that explicates the implicit use-rules for our concept of causation. After presenting the theory as it appears in the literature, I will demonstrate that there are a great many uses of our concept of causation that this theory cannot accommodate. In particular, I will show that the theory is ill-equipped to account for our use of the concept of causation in describing token events. From this I will conclude that defenders of the agency theory are faced with a dilemma: either hold fast to a theory that is unsound, or else concede that said theory is severely incomplete in a way not previously acknowledged. -- Ali Boyle and Matthew Simpson Secretaries of the Moral Sciences Club Faculty of Philosophy University of Cambridge [email protected] http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/seminars-phil/seminars-msc _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
