Dear all, Ali Boyle (Cambridge) will be speaking at the next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club (tomorrow, Tuesday the 19th of April) with a talk titled *Mapping the minds of others. *The abstract for this talk is below:
*Mindreading is the capacity to think and reason about the mental states of others. It's been suggested that infants and some animals are ‘minimal’ mindreaders - that they can think about the mental states of others, but their understanding of mental states is limited in some way. But what is it to be a minimal mindreader? One prominent answer to this question is that minimal mindreaders operate with a different theory of mind. I argue for an alternative answer, according to which minimal mindreaders implement their theory of mind using a different representational format. Specifically, I argue that minimal mindreaders are mind-mappers - they use a map-like format to represent the mental states of others.* This meeting will be held on Tuesday the 19th of April from 2.30 until 4.15 in Sidgwick Hall in Newnham College. The meeting will be followed by tea and coffee in the philosophy faculty. For those who have not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50 for students and £15 for others (alternatively, students can pay a one-off fee for the meeting of £2 and others can pay a one-off fee of £3). These fees can be paid online (at the following link: http://onlinesales.admin.cam.ac.uk/browse/extra_info.asp?compid=1&modid=1&catid=75&prodvarid=87) or in cash on the day.
