ABSTRACT

Recalcitrant emotions are emotions that conflict with your judgements,
e.g. fearing flying despite judging that it is safe. Much of the present
controversy concerning these emotions has to do with spelling out the
precise nature of this conflict, and determining what this, in turn,
tells us about a theory of emotions. This debate, however, neglects a
crucial feature of these emotions, _viz._ their recalcitrant, mulish
nature. This paper aims to make up for this neglect. In particular, I
argue that the recalcitrant nature of recalcitrant emotions can be
accounted for by their cognitive impenetrability.
