ABSTRACT

An increasingly popular view at the intersection of logic and
metaphysics is that logical necessities have their source in the
essences of logical entities. More particularly, there is a view
according to which metaphysical necessity has its source in the essences
or natures of things. Logical necessity is thus understood as a
restriction of metaphysical necessity. But logical and metaphysical
necessity are, nevertheless, importantly distinct. There are
metaphysical necessities that are not plausibly to be classed as logical
necessities. In this paper I will argue that this essentialist account
of logical necessity is seriously flawed, insofar as it unwittingly
mis-classifies some merely metaphysical necessities as logical
necessities. The essences of logical entities, if there are such, are
too rich a source to give rise only to logical necessities.
