Dear Everyone,

Here is a double announcement, of interest to all involved with medieval
philosophy.

First, this FRIDAY, from 14.00 to 16.00, in the Wolfson Seminar Room North,
Trinity College there will be a paper, followed by discussion, on ‘Abaelard on
Grounding’, by Christopher Martin, University of Auckland. Professor Martin is
probably the world’s leading expert on Abelard and one of the leading
interpreters of medieval logic.

Second, our regular sessions of the Medieval Philosophy Reading Group continue
this term, on Wednesdays, 13.15-14.15, starting Wednesday 25 January (NEXT
WEEK, NOT THIS WEEK). In the Lent Term, we study one of the set texts for the
Philosophy in the Long Middle Ages paper (Philosophy Tripos, Part II): this
time it will be Aquinas, Summa Theologiae I, qq. 85-89. You can find a
translation of it (and the rest of the Summa Theologiae) on-line at
http://dhspriory.org/thomas/summa/ <http://dhspriory.org/thomas/summa/> . You
can find the Latin text (together with Latin texts of all Aquinas’s other
writings) at www.corpusthomisticum.org <http://www.corpusthomisticum.org/> . I
shall introduce the first session, in which we shall begin to look at q. 85.
These sessions will also take place in the Wolfson Seminar Room North (where we
met last term). For those of you unfamiliar with this location: enter Whewell’s
Court, Trinity College (opposite the Great Gate, next to Heffers. Walk through
the first courtyard and you will see a modern building on your right. This is
the Wolfson Building. If you take the lift, it will tell you which floor to
choose for the ‘seminar rooms’. The entrance to the North Seminar Room is right
by the lift.

Everyone is welcome to both the talk and the reading group sessions.
