Dear all, The next Women in Philosophy talk is on Monday 6th March, 12-1pm, in the Board Room of the History and Philosophy of Science Department. Everyone is welcome!
Dr Sandy Grant (Cambridge) - "What To Do About Things You Can't Do Anything About" May, I Might, I Must If you will tell me why the fen appears impassable, I then will tell you why I think that I can get across it if I try (Marianne Moore, 1909) There are ways that are impassable. Perhaps they are blocked or flooded, or overgrown. You can't pass over them. But what if they are ways that you must pass over? They pose then something of a challenge. One answer is to say that they just appear impassable. They are not really, even though everything about them seems to make them impassable. But that is too easy an answer. For there are things that really are impassable, and that we nevertheless must pass. I argue that there are things that really are impassable, but can be seen as passable, and that this changes something about them. Notably this does not mean that they were passable all along, and one was merely labouring under an illusion. Rather, we can choose to see a thing as this, or as that. And how we see it makes a difference to what it is. After the talk we will have lunch at The Mill with the speaker. If you would like to join us, please email Elina ([email protected]) by Sunday 5th. We are looking forward to seeing you all there! Best wishes, Cate, Elina, Jess and Laura _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
