Dear all,

The Moral Sciences Club's next meeting will be held on Tuesday 7th March.
We are delighted to welcome Professor Anne Eaton ((UIC), who will be giving
a talk entitled 'Antiporn Feminism Reconceived'. Here is the abstract:

This paper takes as its point of departure a basic but often-overlooked fact
about contemporary pornography, namely that it is primarily pictorial. I
argue that this ought to make a difference to our understanding of how
pornography works and, in particular, to how it affects its audiences. I
develop a model of pictorial rhetoric that focuses more on pornography’s
influence over its audiences’ sentiments and tastes, and less on how
pornography shapes its audiences’ beliefs. In so doing, I also aim to
reconcile two warring camps within feminism, namely Sex Positive Feminism
and Antiporn Feminism. I argue that while inegalitarian pornography (the
most pervasive form) is harmful to women, nothing about pornography per se
promotes and maintains gender inequality. This opens the door to
alternative forms of pornography that are not only harmless to women, but
that even promote gender justice.

The meeting will be held at 2:30 until 4:15, in the Barbara White Room at
Newnham College, and will be followed by tea and coffee.

For those who have not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50
for students and £15 for others, or a one-off fee of £3 (£2 for students).
