Dear all,

This Thursday (4 May), Sarah Sawyer from the University of Sussex will
be talking on "Concepts, Conceptions and Self-Knowledge" (abstract
below) at the Serious Metaphysics Group, for which the term card is now
up: http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/seminars-phil/SMG

As usual, we will meet in the Faculty Board Room in the Philosophy
Faculty from 1-2.30pm. Sarah's presentation will last for 45 minutes,
followed by roughly 45 minutes of discussion. Feel free to bring your
lunch along. All welcome!

Best,

Dan.

Abstract:

The fact that concepts can be grasped incompletely implies a distinction
between thoughts and states of mind. This distinction explains how our
self-ascriptions can be authoritative and yet subject to behavioural
counter-evidence. In this talk, I develop a model of self-knowledge
according to which conscious thoughts provide a partial insight into
one's states of mind, thus accounting for both authority and
self-ignorance.
