PHILOSOPHY FACULTY BOARDROOM
There will be a special event at which the eminent philosopher of science,
Prof. PRASANTA BANDYOPADHYAY (Montana) will be speaking on:

Confirmation and Evidence: A Modest Proposal

Abstract: This paper calls for a modest reorientation in epistemology, and
provides a paradigm-independent probabilistic framework organised around the
distinction between confirmation and evidence. I argue that this distinction is
crucial for understanding key issues in traditional epistemology and theory of
inference. I distinguish my probabilistic account from other probabilistic
Bayesian accounts and an alternative non-Bayesian account of evidence. I also
discuss the significance of two theorems of the probability of misleading
evidence for recent work on scientific inference.
