Dear all, This is a reminder of the following event to take place next Tuesday.
18 JULY 11am-1pm PHILOSOPHY FACULTY BOARDROOM There will be a special event at which the eminent philosopher of science, Prof. PRASANTA BANDYOPADHYAY (Montana) will be speaking on: *** Confirmation and Evidence: A Modest Proposal Abstract: This paper calls for a modest reorientation in epistemology, and provides a paradigm-independent probabilistic framework organised around the distinction between confirmation and evidence. I argue that this distinction is crucial for understanding key issues in traditional epistemology and theory of inference. I distinguish my probabilistic account from other probabilistic Bayesian accounts and an alternative non-Bayesian account of evidence. I also discuss the significance of two theorems of the probability of misleading evidence for recent work on scientific inference. *** For more information on Prof. Bandyopadhyay's work, see: http://www.prasantasbandyopadhyay.com <http://www.prasantasbandyopadhyay.com/> For any questions, please contact Arif Ahmed, [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> I'll look forward to seeing you there.
