The Cambridge Festival of Ideas (16-29 October). This is the 10th year that it
has run and this year it has a nice philosophical theme of 'Truth'.
Talks include:

'Post-truth as post-democracy'
Rae Langton
Monday 16 October: 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Jane Harrison Room, Newnham College
What is the point of free speech? Truth, said the philosopher J.S. Mill, and he
was partly right. Free speech is not a fisticuff free-for-all. What matters is
knowledge, especially the knowledge needed to govern ourselves in a democracy.
'Post-truth' was recently the Oxford English Dictionary word of the year, made
manifest in speech that manipulates and deceives, in the media and in social
media. But the abandonment of truth would be the death, not the vindication, of
free speech. Professor Rae Langton argues that a living democracy needs and
deserves better.

'Can machines think?'

Marta Halina

Wednesday 18 October: 5:30pm - 6:30pm

Whipple Museum, Free School Lane.
Can machines think? Philosopher and cognitive scientist Marta Halina will
explore what is unique about the human mind and whether we can build machines
that match or exceed our abilities.
