Dear all, This coming Wednesday Dr. Emanuel Viebahn (Humboldt-Universität, Berlin) will be giving a paper entitled “Deceptive Presuppositions” (abstract below) at the Serious Metaphysics Group. The seminar will take place at the Philosophy faculty Board Room from 4.30 to 6.00pm.

It is also widely held that assertion contrasts with presupposition and, in particular, that one cannot assert something by presupposing it. Together, these views imply that speakers cannot lie with presuppositions – a view that Andreas Stokke has recently explicitly defended.
