Dear all, A reminder that tomorrow Dr. Emanuel Viebahn (Humboldt-Universität, Berlin) will be giving a paper entitled “Deceptive Presuppositions” (abstract below) at the Serious Metaphysics Group. The seminar will take place at the Philosophy faculty Board Room from 4.30 to 6.00pm.
The talk should last about 45 minutes followed by questions and discussion. All graduate students are welcome. Hope to see you there, Carlo Abstract It is widely held that lies are assertions: the standard definition of lying entails that a speaker lies just in case she asserts something she believes to be false. It is also widely held that assertion contrasts with presupposition and, in particular, that one cannot assert something by presupposing it. Together, these views imply that speakers cannot lie with presuppositions – a view that Andreas Stokke has recently explicitly defended. The aim of this paper is to argue that speakers can lie with presuppositions, and to discuss some of the implications this outcome has for current research on lying, assertion and presupposition. -- Carlo Rossi Email: [email protected] Peterhouse, Cambridge _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
