Dear all,

A reminder that tomorrow John Marenbon (Trinity College) will be giving
a paper entitled 'Avicenna and Duns Scotus on Universals' (abstract
below) at the Serious Metaphysics Group. The seminar will take place at
the Philosophy faculty Board Room from 4.30 to 6.00pm.

The talk should last about 45 minutes followed by questions and
discussion. All graduate students are welcome.

Hope to see you there,
Carlo

Abstract: I shall advance an interpretation of the theory about
universals proposed by Avicenna in his 'Cure' (early eleventh century)
and the one which Duns Scotus, looking back explicitly to Avicenna,
developed at the turn of the fourteenth century. As well as considering
these theories in themselves, I shall ask (which I mean more literally
than usual in these contexts: I am asking YOU rather than myself) to
what extent there is an unchanging Problem of Universals that Avicenna,
Scotus and philosophers today are all trying to tackle.
