Dear all, I am organising a reading group in general philosophy of science. Anyone with an interest in the subject is welcome to join. If you are interested, please send me an email (hd399) and find the information on readings and time/venue below.
*Readings* The topics that have been suggested include the debate between scientific realism and antirealism, the syntactic and semantic approach to scientific theories and scientific representation. You are welcome to suggest other topics. For the first meeting (which will hopefully happen later this week), I suggest that we look at van Fraassen’s empiricist approach to science, as expressed in lecture 5 ‘What is Science — and What Is It to Be Secular?’ in The Empirical Stance. Cambridge provides an electronic version at http://libsta28.lib.cam.ac.uk:2477/Open.aspx?id=172986. *Time and Venue* The reading group will be held in the faculty of philosophy (either in the common room or the Board room) on a weekly basis. For the first meeting, please join us in deciding on a time via https://doodle.com/poll/3hq5m8rqe6gk3kz5. To account for the distance between central Cambridge and Sidgwick Avenue, the meeting will last for 1.5h. Hence the time slots in the poll take the awkward form of 0.5h — please select *all* the time slots that you can make and we will pick the most voted three consecutive slots. (Tuesday, tomorrow is included in the poll for future reference. I understand that it is not realistically going to happen.) If you are interested in joining, it would be great if you could complete the poll as soon as possible and send me an email. You are of course welcome to email me even if you cannot make the session this week — I will add you into the mailing list. Thank you for your time and I hope that you have a great week.
