Dear All,

The next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club (and the final meeting of
Michaelmas Term) will take place on Tuesday 28 November from 2.30-4.15 pm
in the Barbara White room of Newnham College. Laura Valentini (LSE) will
present a paper entitled "On Public-Identity Disempowerment". Here is the
abstract:

It is well known that social disempowerment can *follow from* the
ascription of certain identities, such as gender, race, ethnic, or
religious identities. In this paper, I put the spotlight on a related, but
different form of disempowerment, which affects the processes *leading to* the
ascription of those identities. This is the disempowerment suffered by
those who are deprived of adequate control over how they are publicly
perceived. I call this phenomenon *public-identity disempowerment*. I offer
a framework for analysing this form of disempowerment, explain why it is
wrongful, and show that it lies at the heart of otherwise rather different
social phenomena, including bullying, cultural exclusion, statistical
discrimination, and positive as well as negative stereotyping.

Club members who attend the talk are welcome to join us for dinner with
Laura Valentini later the same evening. Those who wish to do so should
email to express their interest in doing so by no later than noon on Monday
27 November, and we will contact them with details in due course.

Best wishes
