Dear all,

Philiminality Cambridge is hosting its first event of the term Saturday
13 October, 15:30-17:00, in the Howard Building Assembly Room, Downing
College. The goal is to have an interdisciplinary philosophical
discussion concerning notions of gender.

What is drag? How is drag perceived today? What is the relation of music
to drag? How can we analyse concepts of gender over time? Can we discuss
our concepts of gender within the context of other cultures?

Philiminality Cambridge is honoured to have Jacob Mallinson Bird (Dinah
Lux) and Alistair Hyde to speak on different aspects of drag today. Both
speakers will present, followed by a Q&A.

Jacob Mallinson Bird (Dinah Lux) is an academic, drag queen, and model.
He is currently a DPhil candidate in Music at the University of Oxford,
researching drag lip-sync performance, having completed his
undergraduate in Cambridge. When not in the world of high-academia, he
has a successful modelling career in and out of drag, having worked in
Tokyo, London, and New York.

Alistair Hyde is a final year sociology student at the University of
Cambridge. He is the president of CUSU LGBT+ and currently completing
his dissertation on contemporary LGBT+ reactions to drag. When he's not
immersing himself in social theory, you can find him singing in the
Downing choir, or Co-Chairing of the Cambridge Universities Labour Club.

Philiminality is a Cambridge student-run platform for cross-cultural and
interdisciplinary philosophy. We aim to discuss philosophical ideas,
thinkers, and approaches which are frequently marginalised in both
Anglo-American and “continental” academic circles. We hope to engage
with broader horizons of what it means to do philosophy by discussing
intersectional perspectives on brands of thought from across the world.
We also recognise the value of exploring how philosophical issues
interrelate with other disciplines, such as politics, theology,
sociology, anthropology, classics, history, psychology, and experimental
science.
