Dear all,

REMINDER: Tomorrow, at the SMG we will have Dr. Alex Jackson, from Boise State
University, presenting a talk entitled ‘Vagueness, Relativism, and Realism’
(abstract below). As usual it will be from 4.30 to 6.00pm in the Philosophy
Faculty Board Room. The talk should last about 45 minutes followed by questions
and discussion. All graduate students are welcome. This will be the final
meeting for the term. Talks resume on the 23rd of January.

Abstract:

Some questions lack objectively correct answers because they are infected with
relativity or vagueness. How are we to understand these phenomena? I start with
naïve but attractive characterizations of relativism about deliciousness and of
three ways that vagueness manifests. These naïve characterizations have
something in common: they evaluate occurrent propositional attitudes along a
particular normative dimension. What view emerges if we take these claims at
face value? I argue that we arrive at quasi-realism about all subject-matters
infected by a measure of relativity or vagueness. Moreover, the most principled
view in the vicinity is quasi-realism about all but the metaphysically
fundamental facts.
I hope to see you there!
