Dear Colleagues,

We wish to invite you to join us for a new informal reading group on the first
part of Hegel’s Encyclopaedia of Philosophical Sciences, The Encyclopaedia
Logic.

Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was one of the greatest figures of classical
German philosophy, succeeding Kant, Fichte, and Schelling as the leading light
of German idealism. The influence of Hegel's ideas on subsequent philosophy is
substantial. For example, his critique of the Kantian distinction between the
noumenal and the phenomenal, his detailed account of logic as dynamic and
dialectical rather than formal and static, and his rejection of the
correspondence theory of truth in favour of an account of truth as process,
have influenced as wide range of thinkers as Marx, Peirce, Dewey, Rorty,
Lakatos, Putnam, Freud, and Adorno. In the Encyclopaedia Logic, Hegel gives a
précis of his system of logic, which provides a comprehensive introduction to
his philosophy.

We will meet every Tuesday in at 5pm in Peterhouse (F5) for coffee, tea, and a
symposium of speculative philosophical conversation. No previous knowledge of
Hegel, German Idealism, or philosophy is required. We will be using the Hackett
edition translated by Geraets, Suchting, and Harris. We ask attendees to read
the relevant sections in advance (see table below). We can also retire
afterwards for dinner and drinks. Please RSVP to join the mailing list.
