‘Art and Simulation in Philosophy’ - Dr Tom McClelland

Venue: Fitzwilliam Museum, Seminar Room (35)

Date: Wednesday 5 February 2020

Time: 13:15 to 14:00

URL:
https://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/calendar/whatson/art-and-simulation-philosophy

Philosophers as far back as Plato have been suspicious of art: art is in the
business of imitating reality, and we should be engaging with the real world
rather than simulations of it. Although this worry about art is widely
dismissed, a similar suspicion is often raised about virtual reality: there’s
something wrong with living in a virtual world instead of the real world. This
talk explores the promise and peril of simulation and asks whether art and
virtual reality are in the same boat.

Admission is by token, one per person, available at the Courtyard Entrance desk
on a first-come first-served basis 30 minutes before the talk. Assisted hearing
sets are available.
