Dear speech actors and retractors, Has this ever happened to you: You do things with words - as one does - but then you realize that what you did was bad, and you find yourself wishing for a modest time machine? "Speech can harm, or have other kinds of effects we later regret, and sometimes we need to try to use our words to undo what we did in speech." If you're no stranger to the struggle, 'retractions' might be what you need: "Retractions are the general category of speech act that we use to undo previous acts, including in particular previous speech acts." In the next session of the Meaning Reading Group, we'll explore what we do when we retract - with Quill Kukla, Dan Steinberg, and their forthcoming paper "How to Undo Things with Words: The Pragmatics of Retraction".
Please join us on Wednesday, July 29th, from 4.00 to 5.30pm UK time, for the discussion. Please find the paper here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/boy9ifiem5kzljw/Kukla%2C%20Steinberg%20-%20How%20to%20Undo%20Things%20with%20Words.%20The%20Pragmatics%20of%20Retraction.pdf?dl=0 And please find the Zoom invitation below: Meaning Reading Group https://zoom.us/j/95270195257 Meeting-ID: 952 7019 5257 The very best, Nikki _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: https://lists.cam.ac.uk/pipermail/phil-events/ Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
