Dear opponents of manipulative political rhetoric,

Have you ever felt like it's generally not considered okay to 'be racist', but
bigots are still out there stoking racial resentment anyway? Perhaps it is up
for debate what it means to 'be racist'? Perhaps norms about what counts as
racism might be shifting due to covert rhetorical moves? Perhaps this has
something to do with speakers saying stuff like "I'm not racist, but..."? And
perhaps these are just rhetorical questions to introduce next week's paper
about the kind of rhetorical move "which just barely covers a thing that you're
not supposed to show in public"? Find out more next week, when we're joined by
Jennifer Saul to discuss a draft of her forthcoming paper on "Figleaves".

Please join us on Wednesday, August 26th, from 4.00 to 5.30pm UK time, for the
discussion.

Please find the paper here:

The very best,
Nikki
