Dear politicians of language, In next week's session, we'll talk about an effort to "change the focus in theory of communicative meaning, away from the idea of meaning as an object, a lump of information, and towards the idea of meaning as a process which connects people to the world and to each other".
To do so, we'll be joined by David Beaver and Jason Stanley to discuss drafts of two chapters from their exciting book-in-progress, "The Politics of Language: An Essay in Non-Ideal Theory". In the first of these chapters, we'll read about why "Meaning is not content"; and in the second, we'll instead be presented with a theory of "attunement" - of how we are attuned to the world and each other via language, and how this process helps us to understand common ground, presuppositions, and ideologies, among others. ATTENTION! Next week also marks the inauguration of our new timeslot! It seems that slightly more people would prefer if we met about two hours later than before, at 6:15pm UK time, which is 1:15pm Eastern Time - so we'll try out that timeslot and see what happens. So, please join us on Wednesday, September 23rd, from 6.15 to 7.45pm UK time, for the discussion.
