Dear all,

The first meeting of the Serious Metaphysics Group will take place tomorrow
(October 21st) at 4.30-6pm on Zoom (details below). Owen Griffiths (Cambridge)
will present a paper entitled 'The Collapse of Logical Pluralism' (co-authored
with A.C. Paseau).

Abstract
Logical pluralists contend that there is more than one equally correct logic.
We argue that this is an unstable position. The logical pluralist needs to
engage in metalogical reasoning and it is appropriate to ask which is the
correct logic for this purpose. We will argue that they cannot satisfactorily
answer this question. We focus on the pluralisms of Beall & Restall and
Shaprio, and then generalise to all versions. We argue that the pluralist, such
as Shapiro, who embraces a large number of logics, is left with an unacceptably
weak metalogic. The more modest pluralist, such as Beall & Restall, avoids this
problem but the logics they accept are unmotivated. We argue that, between
these poles, there is no defensible logical pluralism.
