Dear all,

This is just a reminder that the Mental Sciences Club will meet today from 4:00
till 5:30 p.m. when Maiya Jordan (British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow in
philosophy) will be talking to us about “A Non-Doxastic Account of
Self-Deception”.

Abstract: Regarding someone who self-deceives that P, what is the nature of her
professed belief that P? Doxastic accounts hold that it is a genuine belief.
Non-doxastic accounts deny this. In particular, the pretence account holds that
the self-deceiver’s professed belief is a pretence that she believes that P. I
argue that the truth lies somewhere between these two positions. The
self-deceiver’s professed belief is a pretence that she believes that P, but it
is a pretence that is distinctively restricted, because necessarily
misrepresented by her as a genuine belief. The result is that she sometimes
acts as if she believes that P, and other times acts as if she does not so
believe.
