It happened again.  I started ripping a CD with Grip, it suddenly slowed
waaayyy down (though I'm sure it was moving).  I left it running
overnight (hoping it would finish) only to find it had locked up after
only a few minutes of ripping.

(This reminds me of the old Windows message: This program has performed
an illegal operation and will be shut down.  The proper law enforcement
authorities have been contacted.  ;-)

Anywayz, it only screwed up my FS a little bit.  This time, however, I
should point out that I'm using RH8.0 and it's not even recompiled for
athlon architecture, so it's right out of the box.

I really think it has something to do with how Red Hat seriously insists
upon being able to read a CD.  Sticking in a badly scratched or very
dirty CD may kill it.
