Yes, this is an important area that we were able to improve in Red Hat Linux 8.0 when we included the Linux kernel "speakup" patches, which drive various hardware voice synthesizers and braille readers. Unfortunately we found that the patch had very bad interactions with some keyboard layouts (mostly non-US layouts). Because the patch isn't set up to be modular, there's no way to limit the exposure of speakup to only those who need it. Unfortunately we weren't able to address all of our concerns in time to include speakup in Red Hat Linux 9.
We're also investigating the work that's currently underway to provide Accessibility Technology hooks into GUI environment.

Thanks for the info. I'll hold off on pushing this on my friends without sight just yet. When the problems are resolved, I'll push harder to get them to try it out.
