It is possible now if you know what you are doing. Upgrading minor
versions (eg. 7.2->7.3) should work, but jumping major versions is much
more risky. The technique I believe works is to upgrade the redhat-release
package by hand, and the rest can then be done via RHN/up2date.

None of this is supported by Red Hat, you miss any fixes or better package
selection done as part of Red Hat's normal install, and you may end up
having to install/upgrade in the normal way if things go wrong.

I wouldn't try it unless you have the necessary skills to pick up the
pieces afterwards if it all goes wrong, and unless the system is one you
can easily reinstall from scratch if it all goes wrong.
